At the end of 2024, we upgraded some of our equipment ready for the 2025 boating season..We bought ourselves a fantastic Rear-Steering extending specialist boat trailer. It was purchased in Germany and Geoff enjoyed both enjoyed a weekend in Berlin and then a steady and enjoyable drive back, learning as he went, the nuances of driving one very big and well built rear steer trailer
This trailer is especially useful for the taller/heavier boats. The steering axles sit completely behind the boat itself, which then allows us to load keels even lower. We can now load a mere 150mm off the floor, which many boat trailers simply cannot do! It can also extend to allow up to a 15m boat.
The rear wheel steering is interesting because it is generally a lot easier for navigating those locations with a tight access; and because of the rear platform, it is better for carrying the new generation of yachts, with really tall masts. Not only do the back wheels steer and follow the lorry but if the access is particularly tricky, another person can stand behind the trailer and operate the trailer steering using a very helpful remote control.
We have also upgraded our Escorting Warning Car – a Toyota Hilux pick-up - which we use for escorting the widest of loads, as well as for towing customers small boats on their own trailers. This new one has a Euro 6 engine, which is now essential for when visiting clean air zones. The new clean air zones are popping up everywhere but currently includes anywhere within the M25, as well other cities like Bristol and Portsmouth.
